Japan great band, mick great inivitave bass player, I play bass myself, I do my own thing like mick and that's what it's about in my opinion, Music is a art and you need to express yourself and your art, mick did that so well with his bass playing and his bass lines, never exactly the same each time either, I get that, he was an artist not a mimic /recorder. Lots of great memories with Japan when I was approaching my teens. I wou go back to 78 to 85 in a loop for the rest of my life without a problem! Obviously no school though.

Amazing. So ahead of their time. They called it too soon. I mean they invented this sound. I can’t think of anything that came close to this kind of innovation. Well except King Crimson.

I remember this when it came out. I was in my early 20s. I'm my early 60s, it reaonates so powerfully now.... The ghosts of my life blow wilder than before ...

I remember seeing this as the time of broadcast. I was going around asking if anyone heard of the song "Taking Islands in Africa" by Japan for weeks afterward...

1981 Some one gave me an album saying they just bought it, listened to it and hated it and did I want it; I took it home and played it and OMG I was hooked on the sound, it was so different from everything else that was going on at that time, the album was Tin Drum, 40+ years later most of my LP's have disappeared but I still own this LP I now also own the CD version as well. It was an amazing sound and it was an amazing time in music.

Annie we love you…RIP…And if you're in any doubt, Richard Barbieri (David's brother) is a key member of Porcupine Tree to this day.

I like to think that Mick coming up front right away and being his gloriously talented self if a big FU to that intro that angers me every time! I say that as someone who was once a 13-year-old girl who could appreciate musicianship along with good looks.

The most impressing thing about this song is that it was broadcastet on TV. Nowadays unthinkable. Sad world.

Every time Karn comes in, it ups the level of excellence. What a wonderful bassist he was.

I was lucky enough to see them live at Birmingham Odeon, they really were brilliant live.

I've recently taken up playing bass (having previously played guitar). Whilst there's a lot that is shared between the two, the techniques for 'proper' bass playing are something of a steep learning curve! Watching Japan's bass player, i have a new level of respect for artists who can do what he does!

Love it when the mix has Mick's bass up front. I'm guessing he may have made it a point by the time they recorded this.

And kudos to Mick for not taking the opportunity to badmouth Sylvian, who definitely deserved it, and kept it focused on creativity. Very rare.

Listening to this takes me right back to being at Uni. Walking back to student accommodation late at night with this on my Walkman. How the hell can this be 40 years ago???
