originally transmitted 3.10.83. Steve Jansen interview about future projects.
love Steve in this, don't think any of the Japan guys liked doing press. in this the interviewer acts like it's a job interview, he's the same in the David Sylvian and Mick Karn interviews too..

    Japan great band, mick great inivitave bass player, I play bass myself, I do my own thing like mick and that's what it's about in my opinion, Music is a art and you need to express yourself and your art, mick did that so well with his bass playing and his bass lines, never exactly the same each time either, I get that, he was an artist not a mimic /recorder. Lots of great memories with Japan when I was approaching my teens. I wou go back to 78 to 85 in a loop for the rest of my life without a problem! Obviously no school though.

    Amazing. So ahead of their time. They called it too soon. I mean they invented this sound. I can’t think of anything that came close to this kind of innovation. Well except King Crimson.

    1981 Some one gave me an album saying they just bought it, listened to it and hated it and did I want it; I took it home and played it and OMG I was hooked on the sound, it was so different from everything else that was going on at that time, the album was Tin Drum, 40+ years later most of my LP's have disappeared but I still own this LP I now also own the CD version as well. It was an amazing sound and it was an amazing time in music.

    I like to think that Mick coming up front right away and being his gloriously talented self if a big FU to that intro that angers me every time! I say that as someone who was once a 13-year-old girl who could appreciate musicianship along with good looks.

    • @OnlyGoodMusic_
      @OnlyGoodMusic_ 21 день тому

      Yes, without a doubt, it is the best of all those that reached #5. My other 5 favorites who reached that position are almost all concentrated in that same era, what a era it was! 5. Gary Numan - We Are Glass (1980) 4. Spandau Ballet - To Cut a Long Story Short (1980) 3. Hazel O'Connor - Eight Day (1980) 2. OMD - Joan Of Arc (1981) 1. Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger - This Wheel's On Fire (1968) Honorable Mentions to The Flying Lizards - Money (1979), Tears For Fears - Pale Shelter (1982/3), David Bowie - Space Oddity (1969, original release reached #5, in 1975 it was re-released and was #1), Cockney Rebel - Judy Teen (1974), Sträwberry Switchbläde - Since Yesterday (1985), Morrisey - Suedehead (1988), The Prodigy - Out Of Space (1992) and Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group - Freight Train (1957). Surely I am forgetting some, and perhaps I am unaware of others, but from what I know, it is my opinion.

    I've recently taken up playing bass (having previously played guitar). Whilst there's a lot that is shared between the two, the techniques for 'proper' bass playing are something of a steep learning curve! Watching Japan's bass player, i have a new level of respect for artists who can do what he does!
